“O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgements, and his ways past finding out!”
I’m not here to bore you with the details of one of the most high-profile cases related to religious faith and its abuse in recent history. I am here to make a simple statement.
Religion is at best, useless, and at worst, dangerous.
12 Step Programs like “AA” and rehabilitation centers do not boast high success rates. I don’t expect them to. By the same token, I don’t expect the superstitious to cease and desist from attending their church mass every Sunday, and gazing up at the ceiling while mumbling incoherent gibberish to an omnibenevolent “god” who is is perfectly “righteous”, but not QUITE “righteous enough” to bother to prove himself objectively.
To suggest that man cannot be good without God(s) is to admit that they are not in fact moral, but simply fearful. There is a difference between honest morality and simple obedience to avoid punishment, or in hope of reward, and only without faith is this distinction always clear.
